La Salle’s men’s cross country team has won a lot of titles, eight of the last 14 held in the Atlantic 10 to be specific, and the number just keeps on growing. A super tight pack and a phenomenal performance by talented senior Nico Greco allowed La Salle to win their first title since 2011, scoring a superb 27 points. (Cross country is scored by adding the finishes of your top-five runners)
Greco, a short 5-foot-7, made a move at about 3.5 miles of the 8k race and never looked back. His winning time of 23:46.9 at Pole Green Park, in Mechanicsville, VA, was one of four times under 24 minutes. Greco was joined by seniors Zack Sullivan and Nick Ross, who finished 2nd and 4th, respectively.
Rounding out the top-five were senior Vince Perozze and junior Ian Barnhill, who finished 8th and 12th. La Salle had four runners in before any team’s second and six guys in before any other team’s fourth. The La Salle men’s team will look to carry this momentum through to NCAA Regionals, where they look to be the first La Salle team ever to qualify for NCAA nationals. Regionals will be held November 15th at Lehigh University.
The Explorer women were not favored like the men heading into today’s race, but ran admirably and finished third. Senior Michelle Capozzi finished 7th with a time of 17:19, while the women also had finishers at 21, 25, 26 and 39. Their 118 points were just one ahead of Saint Louis and 65 behind winners Richmond.
